The cabin counselor meetings for the month had just ended and as always Mairin hadn't said to much but a suprisingly nice change was that Percy was there. He technically wasn't a counselor but nobody really cared he's Percy. Mairin was especially shy this meeting due to the fact that she was sitting next to James, a son of Hephaestus, he was so cute, and she had always looked forward to the summers when he would come to camp. This past year when he decided to stay she couldn't have been happier, not that she could ever tell him, they had only ever talked at the meetings and Mairin wished she was brave enough to change that.

James always looked forward to the monthly Cabin Counselor meetings. Other than meals and random run ins, it was the only time that he ever saw Mairin Caspian, the girl he had been pining after for almost seven years. Shy and sweet, she had caught his attention early on in his camp years. James had always been the type to notice the people on the sidelines, especially when he was trying to impress people with his cheesy jokes and wild antics. She had smiled once, at a joke that no one else had even laughed at, and from that moment on he had noticed her.

So now, here they were in front of the Gods and everyone sitting beside each other at the Cabin Counselor meeting. As the meeting ended, people started to get up to leave and James turned toward her, opened his mouth, and closed it again.

This meeting was much like the ones Percy had gone to when he was cabin counselor. Snacks, talking, some laughing. Those these meetings were a little more light hearted than the ones that he had been part of a few years ago. Thankfully. So, seeing as there was nothing more important than the Stoll's teaching other Hermes kids how to change the setting on the showers so that hot was cold, Percy found himself studying his kid sister. And the guy she was sitting next to. 

They both sat very straight, as if nervous about sitting by each other. The guy kept glancing at her, and she kept glancing at him. He tried to keep the smirk off of his face. What would Annabeth say about these two. Did Marin like this guy? Probably. Why hadn't she told him? Well, he was a guy. Do girls tell guys stuff like that? Annabeth didn't... or did? She talked to Percy about himself... he guessed that counted. 

The meeting ended and people started filing out. Percy stood and stretched, leaning over to Mairin. As he did so he noticed the boy, James, start to say something to her, then stop. He cocked an eyebrow. This boy was never going to get anywhere if he didn't do something. 

"So, Mairin, who is this kid you are sitting next to?" He propped his elbow on Mairin's shoulder, giving a cocky smile to James.

No, no, no, this could not be happening Percy could not get involved. Mairin was completely content to stare at him from across the room or glance at him through her hair. It's not like things hadn't made progress they have even talked before if not briefly at lunch and other meetings.
".......This is James......." She looked over at James and caught his eye she blushed and looked down again. "...he's a son of Hephaestus" She looked a Percy pleading at him with her eyes to not make a mess of this. Mairin had made Annabeth promise not to tell Percy, nothing against him its just he can be a real dork and didn't know much about girl troubles.

You'd think that knowing Mairins brother, the famous Percy Jackson, was sitting there would have made James even more nervous. But, in fact, he actually felt a little more comfortable knowing the guy was there. He seemed lighthearted and upbeat, much like James was. James smiled widely at Percy and instinctively reached across to Percy to offer a high five. When Mairin introduced him, James noticed that he was leaning rather close to her in order to get his hand to Percy. He blushed insanely and smiled awkwardly. "Erh-Yush. James, that's me!" he said, avoiding eye contact with Mairin has he leaned back into his chair. "You're Percy Jackson, right? My brother Leo has mentioned you before," about a hundred times.

Percy's eyes lit up.
"Leo! How is he? Seriously, I have to talk to him actually. Is he going to be at camp this week?" He looked back and forth between the two again. Mairin was giving him a don't-you-dare-do-what-I-think-you-are-going-to-do look. And so of course he was going to do whatever it was she didn't want him to do. If he could figure out what it was. 
"So James, how long have you known my sister?" He needed to get this kid talking. One, because he seemed like a great kid. Two, he obviously had some pretty deep feelings about his sister, they were deep. Really deep. Maybe buried, but Percy was going to help those get out.

"I think he's actually out for a month or two. He's been a bit... distracted," Leo had found his true love, and was rather obsessed with her. It was pretty intense to say the least. The two acted like a couple that had been together for ten years plus some. They had been through a lot, James heard, "but I'll let him know you were here, he'd like to see you, I think," James was tempted to continue talking about his brother to distract from the obvious awkwardness that was in the air. But Percy was rather persistent. James turned toward Mairin for a moment, smiling slightly at her and raising a small eyebrow, "erh... about eight years? I was only a summer camper until this last year though," he turned away from her at that moment, back to Percy.

If only he could get his heart to stop pounding in his ears. The sounds was deafening.

Percy smirked at the kids uncomfortable air. He noticed the look he gave Mairin. Maybe the feelings weren't so buried. 
"Why did you decide to stay here year-round? Too dangerous out there? Or maybe a... different reason?" He hid his smile as he spoke. In his mind he imagined what Annabeth would say to him if she were here. 
You are such a seaweed brain! What do you think you are doing! Leave them alone! Ah, yep, he must be doing it right. He put his arm around James' shoulders, waving his had in front of their faces as if showing James all the things around them. 
"Trust me, your options are much better in here." was that too subtle?

Percy couldn't have been more obvious yet she prayed that james didn't notice. Secretly she wanted to hear the answer to Percy's question why had he decided to stay this year? Could it really have been to do with her? or was that just wishful thinking?
"Percy!" Mairin said with a clenched jaw blushing at that last comment. He was dead meat, she would give him his own personal cloud of rain for the next month if he didn't knock it off! Trying to end the awkwardness she turned to James still blushing "Don't pay attention to him, don't you know he has seaweed for brains" She smiled and giggled at her own joke.

"Trust me, your options are much better in here," James felt his face burn red at the words as Percy asked him why he was staying year round. Thankfully, sort of, Mairin jumped in, telling James to pay no attention to her brother with the 'seaweed brains'. James smiled nervously at her, nodding a little. "Erh, yeah. I mean I stayed because I'm getting older now and my mum can take care of herself better... I think she'd like for me to be out of her and her husbands hair for a while," he said, trying to come up with a realistic sounding excuse.

The truth was, his mother would love if he stayed home. Sure the monsters were annoying, but they handled it okay. If his mom knew the real reason he wanted to stay here... well, his mother would probably send him flowers every month to give to this 'girl' he cared for so much.

His cheeks turned red at the thought and he smiled at the siblings again, "so, Percy, how's erh-Annabelle?" James was really bad with names.

To embarrass the kid sister or not? That was always the question. Embarrassing her normally won out. But she really did like this kid, so no embarrassing... unless he had already done that? Nah, he was probably fine. But as he looked at Mairin and then at James, both of them had red cheeks. Wow, he must have missed something that happened between them. He made a mental note to pay more attention. 

Seaweed for brains, she must have picked that up from Annabeth. Did he mind if she called him tha--

Annabelle?

Percy raised his eyebrow. "Annabelle?" Had this... boy just called his girlfriend Annabelle? Maybe he wasn't good enough for his kid sister. Nope. If he couldn't even remember important people's names, he definitely wasn't good enough for Mairin.

So James was here to because he felt in the way at home. She shouldn't have gotten her hopes up, why would he have stayed for her. They barely spoke and when they did i was usually about camp stuff, this was the first time that had really talked and her brother was here, not the most ideal situation. Sadden by her run off thoughts she was still gald that he was here whatever the reason.
James asked Percy about Annabelle.......oops that would probably not go over to well with Percy, he could be a little touchy when it came to Annabeth. She quietly said " Oh James its actually Annabeth." She smiled hoping that he wouldn't feel too embarrassed.

James actually leaned back a little as Percys clear disdain of James's wrong name guessing came out of his mouth. He was saved, however, by Mairin who gave James the right name. "Ah, right, Annabeth. How could I forget!" he chuckled nervously, smiling at Mairin before turning his attention back to Percy. "Leo has told me a lot about you two," more than James really wanted to know, to be honest. Leo was a big talker, that was certain.

He cleared his throat, reaching a hand out and placing it on the Ping Pong table in front of them. "Is she in Camp Half-Blood right now as well?" he asked.

Percy kept his annoyance in check. Mairin liked this kid. Getting Annabeth's name wrong was common... especially at Camp Half-Blood where Mr. D got everyone's names wrong. 

"Yeah, she is, probably doing something really smart right now." he said calming himself. He needed to help Mairin. He could make sure this kid remembered Annabeth's name later. 
Mairin. Focus on Mairin. 
"So, James. What are you doing next week? Mairin was going to come back to New Rome with Annabeth and I, maybe you could come to. We could go sightseeing, show you around New Rome." True, he and Annabeth were planning on asking Mairin to come with them, but they hadn't yet, and... Annabeth may not be thrilled about Percy inviting another person to stay with them. WEll, if the crazy storm of an angry Annabeth broke loose, Percy could hide the kid away in his apartment.

"We're going to New Rome?" Mairin perked up. She hadn't gotten to go yet and was secretly hoping her brother would let her come stay with them. Percy had told her amazing stories about the place. "Really you want me to come with you?" she looked eagerly at Percy. She turned toward James "Percy has told me amazing things about New Rome, I hear its huge and there are so many people!" She blush as she realized how excited she had gotten "It would be fun if you came though, not that you have to if you don't want to" She added that last part quickly not wanting to pressure him into coming. She didn't even know if he had plans that week.
