I Eat Danger For Breakfast (Annabeth, Mairin, James)

Percy went through his bag one more time. Last time he left his toothbrush here, that was a pain for the entire trip through the labyrinth. After verifying he had all of his belongings for the 5th time, he swung his bag over his shoulder. Today he and Annabeth were going home. With Mairin and James. Weird. But it happened. It was also weird to be thinking of New Rome as home, instead of Camp Half Blood. 

He had said goodbye to his mom yesterday, dropped by and gave her some strawberries and a bouquet of flowers. He wished he had had more time to spend with her, but it seemed like doing all this ambassador stuff took up most of his time. 

Standing at the entrance to the labyrinth was unnerving. No matter how many times he did it, he couldn't forget the friends he had lost on this spot. He had nearly died here. But that didn't matter now. Now, Annabeth and Mairin were with him. And James. But, honestly, he couldn't even admit his feelings for Mairin, so why was he coming? Cause Percy had invited him. He hoped he wouldn't regret it. 

"Are you ready?" He asked Annabeth as he took her hand. He felt like he hadn't seen her in ages, that happened when they came back to Camp. They both had so much to do and not that much time to do it in.

Marin was so nervous she thought she would puke. As much as she had wanted James to come along it also terrified her what if something happened? What if he didn't really like her and was just coming along as a chance to see New Rome? Her thoughts raced as she packed up the rest of her things James was probably already at the entrance with Percy and Annabeth so she needed to get a move on. She ran up to the entrance and everybody was there. She spoke out of breath "Sorry I just needed to grab a few extra things" namely her knives, she didn't often carry them around camp like so many others did but she knew they would be needed on a trip like this.

"Are we all ready? Do we need anything else? Should  grab more supplies? Did we get....? Mairin stopped as she realized she was rambling and blushed. She hoped nobody else could tell how nervous she was.

So, here they were about to head back into the Labyrinth and back to New Rome. Annabeth missed their little house. Well, her little house. Mairin was coming to stay with them as so was some kid named James? Annabeth hadn't met him yet but apparently he and Mairin were supposed to be together, according to Percy. Annabeth smiled brightly as Mairin jogged up to them, talking so fast Annabeth was worried she was going to burn her mouth away. Annabeth took a step forward, placing a hand on Mairins arm. "Hey, Mairin, it's okay. Percy and I have done this so many times, we know the path like the back of our hands," she always hated that phrase, but it was a popular one and she hoped it would give Mairin some confidence. "Plus, we'll have your handsome friend with us, no?"

As if on cue, this handsome little devil burst into the clearing with a giant backpack and an even bigger smile. "Hey guys!" he practically skipped over to the group and came at a stop next to Mairin, his smile growing wider at the sight of her. His adrenaline was running high, which lowered his chances of acting extremely awkward around Mairin like he usually did. "So, what's on the agenda? Fight some monsters? Save some damsels in distress?" he nudged Percys arm at that. He was only kidding, of course! "Well, these damsels may have to save us from the distress actually..."

Percy smiled reassuringly at Mairin, they probably wouldn't even run into any monsters. He and Annabeth hadn't the last three times they had gone. But they were always on guard.
Then James walked up. Percy wanted Mairin to be happy, he wanted her to be with this guy if she really liked him. So what was this angry monster doing they to crawl out of his chest and rip the kid to shreds? But he did compliment Annabeth, he couldn't be a complete loser if he knew to keep on her good side.
"Well, we should get going. We don't want to be stuck in there until the next new moon." he joked. It didn't take that long to get through, if you knew the way. He stepped back so he could talk with Mairin alone for a moment.
"Hey, it really will be okay. And James is going to fit in fine. If you decide you hate him, we can just ditch him him in the labyrinth. "

Annabeth nodded at Percy's encouraging words. "He's right, we should get going," she nodded. As Percy pulled Mairin aside, Annabeth stood beside James in silence. They were strangers really, but she was analyzing him. If he was interested in Mairin, he had to go through Annabeth and Percy, and that was no small feat. Going through this labyrinth would look easy in comparison.

"Okay, time to go," she said once she figured Percy and Mairin had with quality time. She set forth, leading the group.

"Stay close and keep your eyes open. We're a smaller group than usual..." She added, for good measure, obviously.

Percy moved away from Mairin, grinning at his remarks. He stepped up to Annabeth and grinned at her.

" I totally just told Mairin we could leave James in the labyrinth. Half tempted to do it." He took her hand in his for just a moment. "Or we could just ditch both of them. That could be exciting. And It would be funny to see their faces. You know if we hid and watched their faces" Percy trailed off . Well It would be funny, even if he wouldn't do it to Mairin.

He let go of Annabeth's hand so he could pull out Riptide, still in pen form. Just to be ready.

Annabeth glared at Percy, "we're not leaving James anywhere and we're not hiding out," she gently pushed his shoulder with her free hand and let him have a small smile. When he pulled back, she pulled out her own knife and nodded to James and Mairin behind them. "All right guys, follow us..."she stepped into the Labyrinth.

It truly did freak her out that they were still using this old thing, especially after all of her time there in the past. Still, she was one of the people, aside from Percy, who knew the Labyrinth the best and she was fit to lead them.

"Okay back there?" she asked the others and the air suddenly got colder around them.

"We've got company," she warned as they turned the next bend...

Percy's words had really calmed Mairin's nerves except for the part about leaving James in the labyrinth but she knew he was kidding. THey all stepped moved into the labyrinth with Percy and Annabeth leading the way while she hung back to walk with James. "Hey do you really think we'll see any monsters?" She had just finished whispering to James when Annabeth turned the corner and stopped announcing they had company.

Mairin unsheathed her daggers from her belt suddenly becoming alert and aware preparing for what ever was in front of Annabeth. She was a good fighter but she really didn't want to fight in front of James. What if she messed up and got him hurt or worse.......

As Mairin held back to walk with James, he felt his stomach turn over about eighty times with excited energy. Fear of the labyrinth was definitely mixed in there, but it was mostly excitement at going to New Rome especially with Mairin. As she asked her whispered question, he nodded, "if they say we will I bet we will. They've been down here tons of times. There is probably some really freaky stuff down here-" he stopped. "Erh, I'm sure it won't be anything they- we can't handle though."

Suddenly, Annabeth was talking about having some company. James pulled out a screwdriver, yes you read that right, and took a small step closer to Mairin. "What should we do?" he asked in a soft tone.

Percy felt the air change at the same moment Annabeth did and Riptide was in his hands a moment later. He uncapped the pen and his sword extended to it's full length, glistening glory. Annabeth's cousin's sword talked to him, and Percy was pretty glad his sword didn't do that. He could hear it now.
Uh, excuse me, I don't actually like chopping monster's heads off, I would really prefer to chop some celery instead please." Yeah he did not need that when he was trying to stay alive.

Moving back to back with Annabeth, he looked back a Marin and James. "Just stay behind us guys. And It if gets messy, then you can jump in." he instructed. Sure they could take care of themselves. But honestly, between himself and Annabeth, they could cover most anything.

"Prediction, wise-girl?" He asked Annabeth quietly, he was guessing the monster was some sort of snake thing with fire breath powers and maybe a lightening rod on it's head, that would be cool and he had never seen anything like it before. It was always nice to shake things up. But Annabeth normally was better at guessing what kind of monster they were going to face, she had a 9/10 average at getting it right. That one time out of ten Percy got it right. Just kidding, that was the time they were both wrong.

"Prediction, wise-girl?"

Annabeth took in a deep breath, trying to catch a whiff of whatever it was they were up against. Her ears were hyperactive, her sight, the smell... all of her senses were on high alert as she tried to prepare herself and her crew for whatever was coming next. "I think it's a Chimera..." she muttered as the creature turned the corner to reveal the body and head of a lion, paired with the head of a goat and the tail became the head of a snake. The snake tail could breath fire, the goat head was like a banshee in it's screams and the lion head well... it had giant teeth.

"Cover your ears..." she muttered, taking a battle stance but also taking two steps back.

"Percy, you handle the lion, I'll handle the snake. You two," she jerked her head toward the other two, "get rid of that goat head."

For some guys, their girlfriend giving them orders was something that would cause a bit of contention. Not with Percy and Annabeth. Nah, when Annabeth told Percy to do something, he did it. Granted she also did what he said, at least when it came to fighting monsters. They were a team. Today, they were a team who were fighting a crazy monster (which Percy was a 1/3 right about!) who wanted to eat them for breakfast... or dinner. What time was it?

Lion head. Percy grinned, he could do lions! Honestly, this wasn't the first lion (hybrid or other) he had faced, and it wouldn't be the last. Maybe the big cats just really liked him or something. Anyway, Percy lunged forward, not pausing to think about Annabeth's words. Riptide swung through the air, aiming for the lion's neck. This was going to be way too eas---

It caught his sword in it's teeth. Percy's eyes widened as he tugged the sword, but it didn't budge. The snake head whipped around at the same time as the goat head did. The combination of fire and concussive screams was enough to make Percy stumble back a few steps. Dazed, Percy shook his head a few times. He wished he had listened to all of Annabeth's instructions and put in earplugs or something. Blinking, he looked at Annabeth.

"OKAY THAT DIDN'T WORK! WHAT NOW?" He shouted. Why did his voice sound so quiet?

Percy charged ahead, as Percy always did, and Annabeth reached both hands up to plug her ears. She turned to Mairin and James, signaling them to do the same as she made her way toward the head of the snake. She reached it just before all the heads turned on Percy. She glared at him as he yelled, shaking her head. "JUST WAIT FOR YOUR SWORD TO COME BACK AND HANDLE THE LION!" she called. James started toward the creature, preparing to tackle the goat head it seemed. If only they could get it to be unable to make a sound. She creeped toward the snake, releasing her ears at the last second before pulling out her knife and jumping on the creature back, her knife aiming to slice of the snakes head.

Percy charged and Andrew plugged his ears, following Annabeths example. Then she was jumping on the creatures back as he crept toward the goat head, fingers still in ears. It had only screamed a moment ago, so perhaps it wouldn't scream again right away.... he unplugged his ears at the same time Annabeth did, lifting a hand to summon his homemade tazer type device out of his pack. It landed in his hand and he lurched toward the goat, attempting to shove the tazer down it's throat. He succeeded, and activated it using his technokinesis. As the creature convulsed he took several steps back and replaced his fingers in his ears. "PLUG YOUR EARS AGAIN," he warned, sure it would scream one more time before it's vocals chords burnt up.
