THANOS "NINE" of ITHACA|(im)MORTAL|currently 19|none| |Death Curse|Ben Barnes|He/Him|
PERSONALITY
Nine is a very peculiar individual. He's rash and reckless and doesn't seem to take many things seriously. He tends to be very flattering towards strangers but is mostl rude to his friends, although this is a defence mechanism designed to keep others at bay. He has lived many lives and has a very distinct response to pain. It makes him very irritated and ill tempered. While not prone to aggression of any other kind than vocal, his vocabulary of curses remembers the many unseen centuries with fondness. His personality is highly adaptive and he often finds himself in unexpected places.
He has a soft side to him and cares about demigods most of all, because they are the closest reminder he has left of the life he lost so many years ago. Yet they also serve as a torturous reminder of his fate. He's very bad with authority but has a very nurturing and fatherly side to him when needed.
HISTORY
Thanos was born a very long time ago. Back when the Gods were still held in reverence and when the Roman empire was but a shadow looming in the unknown future. He was the son of a farmer and lived a very simple life, even by those standards. His family didn't have much in terms of money so when he was old enough (around 12) he started going on the road, taking to petty theft, trade and other vices that left him entertained. He learned the basic skills with a sword and his sharp wit and sharp tongue got him in many troubles that his feet helped him escape. It didn't take long for him to become a follower of Hermes and often prayed to the God, leaving offerings and eventually considering himself a priest of Hermes.
As often the case for thieves, Thanos wasn't good at staying free. He got punished whenever he got caught and trouble followed him. Yet most of the time he managed to run free. He was very good at running and only those he left behind when he ran seemed to be able to reach him easily. One of these people was a young lady named Katarina of Ithaca. The young beauty caught his eye and heart, but his own heart was far more frivolous. The two were playful and friendly, although it was hardly the love of a lifetime. Yet they did as was expected and were married and had a single heir. A young boy that would follow in the footsteps of his father.
When he was nineteen years of age and by far and long an adult of his own time, Thanos found himself in more trouble than he could deal with. He's gotten far too greedy in wishing to sustain his family despite them being relatively well off compared to most in their small village. He'd stolen from an arrogant noble and had gotten caught red handed. He found himself executed and his life was cut short.
As he went down to the underworld he made one very crucial mistake. He insulted both Hades and Persephone, and even more the bond they shared. He was annoyed at the fact he'd gotten himself killed and had taken it out on the only two available targets. Gods. What exactly was said prior to his banishment, Nine refuses to tell. Yet it happened, Nine was banished from the underworld and cursed to live an immortal life. Never to find rest in the halls of the afterlife until a certain condition is met. One that has long since been lost to time and Nine isn't very open hearted in sharing about his condition.
Since the funeral rites of old burned the bodies most often, it took Thanos many years to awaken into the tortured state of life. He awoke as he had been moment before his death, nineteen years of age and back to his full physical prime. Yet the world had continued without him. He had no idea what was going on and it took him a very long time to rediscover who he was now and what had happened in the world. While to him it felt like moments, many years had passed. When he returned to Ithaca and found his old home his wife was long since dead and their son was an old man. While he lived with his sun in grace for the most part until the latter departed, Thanos felt changed by the events that had transpired and had grown far more silent and withdrawn.
He died, multiple times, every time skipping years as his body shaped itself in a space that was destined to lie undisturbed until his body was as Hades had cursed it to be at awakening. Times changed and while Thanos might age and die of old age, he never remained dead and was ever reborn as the nineteen year old that had gotten caught in theft.
Over the years, Thanos found himself killed in almost all possible ways and he grew increasingly reckless and careless. He lived and died and was reborn much like the tide. Then, as burrying the dead became more common, he found that he recovered faster and lived more. Not that such a thing was a blessing to him, as boredom and depression were the most common factors of his life.
As the world he had been born and raised in disappeared before his eyes and the temples he'd seen in full glory slowly came to ruin, he choose for himself a new name and identity. It lasted shortly, as most empires do and at some point he choose an identifyer that would easily translate across the span of time. He choose himself a number to represent him, based on the markings of his skin prior to his death that never disappeared. The things that were permanent about him in every time of life.
While the world changed around Nine, at first he was impressed but even that failed to last. Even in the later centuries, he found more quiet and peaceful lives, sometimes chasing love and other times a life of criminal activity. He honed the various skills he acquired over the centuries and sometimes entertained the world as a history teacher.
Nine mostly attempted to keep an eye on his various lines of succession throughout the ages. While he keeps watch of his descendants across the centuries he was most upset when he found out the line of his second wife had died out. It had never been a very fruitful line to begin with but the pain of losing a family he'd known for a long time to a war that seemed to have little significance stung him a lot. This has led him to act, at times, as guardian for those that are the primary heir in the bloodline that sprung from his first and uncursed life.
His most recent death being of the more brutal nature has led him to recover somewhat more slowly and he's back to camp once more to attempt to break his curse and find the peace of eternity, although he is understandably sceptic of the posibilities of this happening at all. Still he has hopes that this will help him both in keeping his heirs alive while he is and will help him in his quest for peace.
EXPLANATION OF ABILITY SPECIALTY
As mentioned, Nine is exceptionally good at dying. He's exceptionally bad at staying dead. His special ability is not so much a blessing as it is a literal curse. He's not gifted in anything beyond an accessive amount of practise but his curse enables him to always recover from any shape or form of fatal injury. He heals slower when he's alive but when dead things that would normally take a few months to heal with leaving only a scar cause him to restore to his 19 year old self without the scar. It's hard to estimate how long some injuries would take to heal, but on average the normal time to fully heal from an injury is the time he spends in either the ground or a masoleum. When cremated he reshapes in a place determined by the fates to remain undisturbed until his time comes to rise once again.
