Another routine day for the books. That was almost a relief after the chaotic week Zoe had just wrapped up. There had been much more social interaction than she was used to – almost too much, if she was speaking with complete honesty. Zoe was used to juggling a lot of projects, and she was almost infamous for keeping an entirely mental tally of everything she needed to do. But those projects were just for her, and were therefore subject to her schedule and convenience. Doing things for other people, doing things with other people…much less convenient. But not entirely unwanted. Long story short, it was a relief to do something as mundane as eat dinner. Zoe had filed along with the other Hephaestus campers, lingered at the flames to do the (emotionally charged) traditional sacrifice, then shuffled over to the table. Choosing a spot could be very political at times – it was all about who got along with who, which campers could be considered friend or foe – truly exhausting at times. Zoe didn’t have much to do with most of the other Hephaestus campers, truth be told, but she could always count on finding the right spot at meal times. Yeah, she could count on Alaric. She didn’t really consider any of the other Hephaestus kids her siblings (that just opened up a can of worms that she had carefully buried deep in her psyche) but he was probably the closest thing to a brother that was possible here. Awkward small talk or insincere conversations weren’t necessary with him. So she sat across from Alaric, as always, and considered her empty goblet rather than make eye contact. “Hey.” It wasn’t much of a greeting, but typical for her. Alaric Drake
