PERSONALITY
Varian is a sarcastic, intelligent inventor. He prefers to solve problems using science, even though that he knows sometimes people can use their abilities. He wants to do good in the world and help others, but he is a bit awkward around other people, often not quite knowing how to communicate what he means to.
However, once you are Varian's friend, he is kind, supportive and understanding. He'd do anything he could to help you achieve your goals. He wants to help people achieve their goals, and often believes his inventions are the best way to do this, even though they do not always turn out the way he wants them to.
When he is working, leave him alone because he does not appreciate being disturbed or distracted, unless you are there to help. If you come to help, expect to be put to work because when it comes to his inventions, Varian is incredibly focused and determined. He makes a plan and then follows it through.
HISTORY
Varian grew up the younger son of a famous weapons specialist, Clarissa Ruddiger. He traveled with her and watched as she tested out her various weapons. Even as a young child, Varian was always inventing things. At first it was with toys, like leggos. He would create something and show his mom, always trying to impress her.
As he grew up, he expanded his base of usable materials. He created his first explosion when he was trying to make a more efficient toaster for his mother. She ran into the room when she heard the explosion, terrified about what might have happened to her son, but Varian was standing in the middle of the room with wide eyes, holding the exploded toaster in his hands.
It wasn't long after that experience that Varian was told the truth about his father. A satyr came to him and led him to Camp Half-Blood, where Varian was claimed at age 9. Even before being claimed, he continued his experiments, though it worked out much better after Hephaestus claimed him. Then he was able to really invent. Because his mom was still working for the army, they decided it would be better for him to spend the majority of his time at camp and they would spend time together when she had time off.
EXPLANATION OF ABILITY SPECIALTY
Varian is a great inventor. The strongest trait with him is his inventive mind. Varian often wakes up in the middle of the night with ideas that he feels he has to get out. Sometimes he can get away with writing down his ideas and going back to sleep, but often he will be drawn into intensive drawing and planning stages for his upcoming invention. Many of them are created in forges, though he has many more plans than creations.
The main problem with Varian's inventions is that they seldom work the way he wants the first time he creates them. Or the second. Sometimes they work on the third round, but often he has to recreate his inventions many, many times before they actually work the way they were intended to. This is part of the reason why he has so many more ideas than inventions. Often, his failed inventions/experiments have a tendency to explode.
However, Varian is very determined and wants to help others with his inventions. Once they do work, they are also very useful to the people they were created for.
Varian has pyrokinesis. It is very useful to him as he brings his inventions to fruition. He prefers to work in an old-fashioned forge, and often uses his abilities with fire to get his materials to just the right heat he needs. He's also not opposed to using them to impress cute girls when the opportunity arises.
