PERSONALITY


River has always been a shoulder to cry on, someone to snuggle up to and read a book, or even someone to hide from enemies. Of course, that would be because he is a tree. He is very slow to make major decisions, weighing out every piece of it, and then mulling it over, sometimes for years, before making a decision. He moves quickly only when threatened and then he lashes out with a vengeance. He does not tolerate the maltreatment of himself or anyone he cares about and is fiercely loyal to those who throw their lot in with him. He can be bitter about the world and life in general, however he always fights for what is right and knows just how to brighten up a day.



HISTORY



River was planted around 480 AD in Greece. His tree grew up to shade a temple of Demeter, and he often helped people on pilgrimages take their first steps into the temple and aid them with medicine made from his bark and leaves. He loved to see the variety of people that came through and wish he could see the places they came from. 



All too soon, the Greek empire was destroyed and the temple of Demeter was abandoned, leaving him alone to watch the world from afar.  Sitting at the top of his tree he would watch the world pass by and leave him. Never before had he been so jealous of humans being able to stray so far from their homes, able to explore the earth. His jealousy grew to frustration, but he could think of nothing to do about it.


Years passed, his tree continued to grow, despite not having anyone else to care for it but him. He mostly stayed hidden, not wanting to reveal himself and risk mortals not understanding. Luckily,  some demi-gods took up residence near him and he eventually befriended them. They decided soon after to relocate to America. Knowing of his wish to see the world, they offered to transplant his tree. 


Several difficult months of sea travel followed, revealing to River that he was not as ready to travel as he had first thought he was. However, he made the most of it, seeing as much as he could. When they finally landed, River's tree was taken to what would one day become Long Island. He was planted in the forest of a newly formed camp for Greek Demi-Gods. The camp was made to protect demi-gods and for the first time since ancient Greece, River felt safe, yet was still unsatisfied.


Despite his negative experience traveling with his tree to America, River found that his desire to see the world was not diminished. Each time a group of demi-gods went on a quest he was envious of them, wishing he could go with them, wishing he wasn't attached to his tree.


After the Titan war and the Giant war, River's frustration with being stuck in one place become unbearable. He called for Demeter, Goddess of Plants, and asked her to free him from the burden of being tied to his tree. Demeter was furious that he would think his tree a burden, that he could ask for more than the wonderful life he had. She granted him his wish, with a curse. He would be able to leave his tree, however he would still be tied to it however he would never able to see it again, never be able to protect it. She told him she would consider lifting the curse if he had a glowing recommendation from a demi-god that outlined how in tune he was with nature and how badly he missed his tree. He informed her that if he was allowed to leave, he would never want to see it again. Her fury grew and as punishment, she banished him from his tree, and took his memories. Her reasoning was that if he wanted to be like a human so badly he should have the memory of a human.


Perhaps Demeter meant to leave his recent memories, perhaps not. Either way, River woke up in New Rome with no memory, no home, and an intense longing for a something he felt like he was missing. If he thought hard enough about it he could get an image in his mind. A tree.



EXPLANATION OF ABILITY SPECIALTY



River, being a tree nymph, can mold his body into any shape a tree could potentially take. His body changes into bark on command, extending and growing with a thought. Any large bursts of growth take energy and he can be easily tired by this. Healing small wounds and maladies is simple for him. He can also create a small amount of a very potent "miracle" serum. This "miracle" serum can heal most minor ailments and injuries if applied quickly, if applied late it can speed up the healing process.
