Piper had always thought of the woods as a personal retreat despite prior experiences that had shown her that the woods were anything but a "retreat." She supposed it was because she had spent a good half year practically living there, helping her friends at Bunker Nine. So whenever Piper needed some room to breathe and just relax, she had taken to the woods. However, she wasn't completely stupid. She still took certain precautions, usually avoiding the innermost (and more monster-infested) parts whenever she was either alone or distracted.
Today, it was another nightmare that had driven Piper to her retreat. It hadn't been anything particularly unusual-- just the faces of monsters she had faced before and scenes featuring her loved ones dying. She tried not to dwell on the nightmares since they were not true visions, just distortions of her past. That didn't stop her from stupid brain replaying them over and over as she plunged deeper into the forest.
A branch snapped, causing Piper to snap out of her thoughts and immediately move to a more defensive position as her hand automatically withdrew the sword that had been strapped to her hip. Fear shot through her body, and it took her a second to realize that she'd probably overreacted. Ever since the last war, she had found herself doing that a lot. Swallowing hard, Piper relaxed her grip but continued to hold the sword out in front of her "Hello?" She wasn't that deep into the woods yet, so it was probably just another camper but one could never be too sure.
